A touch of nature in Amsterdam

Stylish and natural roof terrace in the heart of Amsterdam

The rooftop terrace of actor, theatre producer and singer Alex Klaasen, located in the heart of Amsterdam, has become an oasis of peace and greenery. Thanks to the clever design by Erwin Stam Tuinstudio and the craftsmanship of DKM Bouw, this compact space has been transformed into a stylish outdoor area for Alex to relax and enjoy. For the decking and various custom-made furniture pieces, durable Millboard decking boards in the colour Limed Oak were chosen. They combine the natural and warm look of wood with functionality and comfort.

Alex wanted a roof terrace that was not only practical and inviting, but that also respected the challenges of an older building in Amsterdam. Roof load was an important factor here, as was limiting noise pollution for the neighbours downstairs. The preference was also for a natural and warm look, with comfortable seating areas and plenty of greenery. The design had to balance aesthetics, durability and functionality.

Erwin Stam designed a smart and stylish layout where every detail was carefully considered. Choosing Millboard boards from AlterWood in Limed Oak was an easy decision for Erwin because of their combination of durability and easy maintenance. The underlay beneath the boards also means that there is less noise than if tiles were installed on the terrace. The boards are solid, strong and yet relatively lightweight, making them the perfect choice for this particular roof terrace.

The custom-made lounge bench and organically shaped plant stools finished in Millboard give the terrace a playful yet sophisticated look. This furniture, made by DKM Bouw on behalf of Erwin Stam Tuinstudio, is not only practical, but also adds a unique design accent. DKM Bouw delivered beautiful craftsmanship and the round shapes of the lounge bench and the edges of the seat deck were perfectly finished with matching flexible finishing materials from AlterWood. In the same colour as the boards, of course, helping to create the perfect look. A delicate pergola made of slender metal frames offers space for a shade cloth and plants, without weighing down the terrace.

The columns, designed using Millboard by Erwin Stam, have been used as a base for the plant pots: Playful Pots from Torc Pots, a design collaboration between Erwin Stam Tuinstudio and Studio Unhyde with lighting by In-Lite, create stylish elements that highlight the greenery. The carefully chosen layout takes into account sufficient light and air for neighbours, without compromising the privacy and ambience of the terrace.

The Millboard decking from AlterWood offers a range of benefits that perfectly suited Alex’s needs. The boards are completely wood-free, which means they are resistant to rot, warping and various weather conditions, making them extremely durable. Their ease of maintenance is a huge plus. They are algae-resistant, splinter-free, stain-resistant and non-slip and retain their beautiful appearance for many years. Finally, the natural wood grain and warm, light colour of Limed Oak creates an aesthetic that perfectly complements the greenery and carefully designed terrace.

Alex Klaasen’s roof terrace has been transformed into a stylish and functional whole that unites nature and design. Thanks to the clever combination of materials and custom-made furniture, the terrace is not only a beautiful place to relax, but also an inspiring example of how compact urban green spaces can be utilised. Alex can now enjoy a unique outdoor retreat without having to worry about the upkeep.
