Perfectly (and safely) finished swimming pool and terrace

Enhanced Grain boards in the colour Limed Oak were chosen for the natural appearance of sun-drenched wood.

On a spit of land in a wetland area in Oud-Loosdrecht there is a detached house that is situated diagonally on its square parcel. The brief specified that several trees had to be retained, but otherwise the outdoor area was a blank canvas. Whatever was necessary to make the garden appear larger than it is. Further, the client wanted a garden that would provide a variety of experiences. Tiemen Gerris created a design with three triangular garden sections that took advantage of the existing height differences.

In two of the three garden sections, outdoor living takes centre stage: one features the swimming pool, the other the main terrace. Because the major lines run parallel to the façades, diagonal lines appeared on the plot, making the garden appear much larger. The pool is completely surrounded by Millboard decking from Alterwood, a wish of the owners. It also incorporates a stainless steel outdoor shower.

Enhanced Grain boards in the colour Limed Oak were chosen for the natural appearance of beautiful, sun-drenched wood. The sand-white shade of the decking boards creates a cool, sophisticated look and spacious, bright feel. Of course, the high performance of the durable polyurethane material played a major role in the choice of decking boards: they are colour-fast, dimensionally stable and maintenance-free. The strong boards are also wood-free and will not splinter, rot or warp. The resilient, non-porous Lastane™ top layer prevents algae from taking hold, and the material has an inherently non-slip surface, even when wet. Furthermore, the rubber top layer heals over the specially developed screws, making it very safe to walk on the boards with bare feet! This makes it the ideal decking material for swimming pool surrounds.

To tie together the various parts of the garden, it was decided that the decking would run from the pool to the area where the main terrace is located. Thanks to the matching edging, seamless integration was achieved between the pool area, the main terrace and the raised terrace section alongside the pool on which loungers are placed.

‘We are very surprised by the spatial effect of the diagonal lines in the garden. It is also very nice to know that the decking boards are not slippery when wet and no one can hurt themselves on screws. Those are important concerns around a swimming pool!’
