High up garden feeling
A green oasis on the roof terrace of Bram Krikke with Enhanced Grain in Smoked Oak.
Radio DJ Bram Krikke’s large, unused roof terrace in Bilthoven has been transformed into a green oasis where tranquillity, comfort and design converge. Under the guidance of Erwin Stam Garden Studio, the 60 m2 terrace has been transformed into a space that radiates a true garden feeling, with waving ornamental grass, serene colours and a clean design. For the decking, the sides of the canopy and a few pieces of furniture, Erwin has chosen the durable Millboard decking boards in Smoked Oak from AlterWood.
Bram wanted to turn his roof terrace into an inviting space where he could relax and dine with friends and family. Since he does not have much of a green thumb but loves to be surrounded by nature, he specifically asked for a design that required little maintenance, yet had a natural garden-like look. Other important requests included more shade and privacy.
To meet Bram’s needs, Erwin came up with a clever design concept that focused on connection and depth. The long runner formed with Millboard boards leads from the house to a custom-made pergola and dining table. The decking boards flow seamlessly into the dining table and the console behind it, which is also made of Millboard board. This gives the terrace a natural sense of softness and spaciousness. Erwin Stam chooses his materials carefully and always advises his clients on the best design options. When it comes to creating a wood-look finish, he invariably prefers Millboard from AlterWood for its durability, aesthetics and ease of maintenance.
The wisteria-covered pergola provides the much-needed shade and brings the greenness closer. The large planters with ornamental grass add depth, privacy and a true garden feel, while the grey stone tiles add contrast and balance to the design. Millboard has also been used to clad the sides of the canopy, allowing the materials to blend together harmoniously.
DKM Bouw provided the terrace structure, the custom-made steel pergola and the custom-made dining table and console, both featuring Millboard boards. The atmospheric lighting was provided by In-Lite.
Millboard decking boards from AlterWood offer a number of advantages that are perfect for a project like this. The boards are 100% wood-free and low-maintenance while also enjoying a long service life without any warping or rotting. Thanks to their UV and weather-resistant properties, the natural wood grain look retains its colour and appearance, unlike real wood which often ages. The non-slip top layer also ensures that the terrace is safe even when it rains.
Bram Krikke’s roof terrace has become an inspiring space for him where he can enjoy life to the fullest. Thanks to the clever combination of materials, the sleek design and subtle green elements, the terrace feels like a real garden. For Bram, it is a place where he can truly relax and enjoy cosy meals without needing to worry about maintenance or privacy.
